How would you feel if a visitor came into assembly and announced that children from your school have been chosen to start a new life abroad? Confused? Excited? Scared? For over 100 years, churches, charities and religious orders sent British children from poor backgrounds to live in countries across the Empire and Commonwealth. The dream was to save them from poverty and hardship, but many children found themselves living a nightmare. The people in this film are actors, but their words are direct quotes from the people who helped to set up the Child Migration schemes, or adapted from testimonies given by ex-child migrants to the Historical Institutional Abuse Inquiry (HIA) which was set up in 2012.
This film was funded by, and completed with the help of the University of Kent.
