A Hebrew word meaning ‘My Lord’, used to replace the name of God, often represented as JHVH (Jehovah) or YHWH (Yahweh), sometimes written as G-d in order to avoid any possibility of misusing the holy name. Other names of God include Elohim, El Shaddai (The Almighty), Ha’rahaman (The Merciful One) or sometimes simply HaShem (The Name).
Jewish people often begin prayers with words from the Torah, ‘Shema Yisrael, Adonai, Eloheinu, Adonai, Echad’, meaning, ‘Hear O Israel, the Lord, our God, the Lord is One’.
