Explanation

This literally means ‘striving for a spiritual goal’ and has two meanings: 1) A place for practising spiritual disciplines away from society; and 

2) A way of living each stage of life with spiritual disciplines that serve society. 

Context

The four traditional ashramas in Hinduism are: 

  1. Brahmacharya (a young person engaged in study and self-discipline) 
  1. Grihasta (a married person with the duties of a householder) 
  1. Vanaprastha (a retired person), and; 
  1. Sannyasa (someone who has turned away from personal attachments and worldly things).
