Explanation

The practice of sprinkling water onto a person’s forehead or of immersing them in water to show that they have become a member of the Christian Church.

Context

The sprinkling or immersing in water at baptism symbolises purification or birth into a new life as a Christian. In many denominations, baptism is performed on young children when they are given their ‘Christian name’.
