This literally means ‘brother’ and is a term of respect for a person of great faith and learning. It is also used for the person who looks after the Gurdwara.
A bhai is a brother, friend or respected person. Guru Nanak used it as a title for many Sikhs as a mark of honour, e.g., Bhai Mardana, Bhai Lalo.
