chowr; chow-ree
A fan, traditionally made of yak hairs or peacock feathers, used to wave over the Guru Granth Sahib as a sign of respect for its authority.
The chaur is waved over the Guru Granth Sahib whenever it is read. This is thought to come from the practice in hot countries of waving a fan over a highly respected person to keep them cool, and so is a way of honouring the holy scriptures.
