Gurmukhi

gur-mook-ee

Explanation

This literally means ‘from the Guru’s mouth’ and is the name given to the script in which the scriptures and the Punjabi language are written.

Context

Guru Angad, the 2nd Guru, refined the written script of his day to make the hymns of the Gurus accessible to everyone; the script was called ‘Gurmukhi’ from this time on.
