The personal struggle against evil and the effort needed to follow Allah. It can also refer to the collective defence of the Muslim community, using force only as a last resort and only when approved by a lawful authority.
For Muslims, life is a test where we have a chance to do good and keep away from wrong, but this involves a struggle (jihad) against temptation to sin. In wider society too, Muslims must struggle for justice, and stand up against what is evil.
