Mashiach

mu-shai (as in ‘shy) -ach (with ‘ch’ as in the ‘ch’ of Scottish ‘loch’)

Moshiach; Messiah

Moshiach; Messiah

Explanation

This literally means ‘The Anointed One’ who will bring in a golden age for Judaism and all humankind. The idea of ‘anointing’ comes from the ancient practice of pouring a little oil (anointing) on the head of a new king when they took the throne.

Context

There are different Jewish ideas about the Mashiach. Many believe in a real person, a descendant of King David, who will come to lead Israel in an unparalleled period of peace and prosperity, where Israel will be at the centre of world government; others see the whole messianic age as a goal that all Jews should be working towards, whether or not a real ‘Messiah’ comes.
