This literally means ‘illusion’. This is the idea that we do not see or understand the world as it really is, but rather like an optical illusion, we construct a false view based on our own reactions and experiences.
Some Hindus teach that maya prevents us from realising that our atman (our true self) is one with Brahman (the Divine). The greeting ‘Namaste’ reminds Hindus to aim to look beyond maya and see the divine atman in all.
