This is a niche in the wall of a mosque that shows the direction of the Ka’ba in Makkah. Muslims face the mihrab (and therefore the Ka’ba) when praying.
The mihrab in a mosque is usually an arch-shaped niche or hollow in the wall, and it is often ornately decorated. Most prayer mats have a mihrab arch shape on them, showing which way up to lay them – with the top of the arch pointing towards Makkah.
