prana

prar-na

Explanation

This literally means ‘breath’, ‘life force’ or ‘vital principle’. In Hindu thought there are different types of prana, particularly in the human body, but also present in the whole of the universe, both in living creatures and in non-living objects.

Context

Control of the breath is important in many types of yoga in order to balance the vital energies (prana) present in the body. Prana is also important in Indian medicine (called Ayurveda).
