sam-at-ta (the ‘ta’ at the end has a short ‘a’ as in ‘cat’)
sham-at-ta
This means ‘calm’ and refers to a sort of Buddhist meditation that is usually based on attention to a single focus, such as breathing in and out, or an object such as an image of the Buddha.
An aim of samatha meditation is to calm the busy mind, avoiding all distractions, and to understand the habits of thought that get in the way of true happiness.
