Shavuot is one of three pilgrimage festivals mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. This one celebrates the time when Moses was given the words of the Torah (the most important Jewish holy book) on Mount Sinai. It takes place in the summer, around the time of the grain harvest, seven weeks after Pesach.
At Shavuot Jews traditionally use dairy products in their meals; milk is a symbol of the Torah because it nourishes, as milk does for a baby.
