This has come to refer to all the suffering caused by the systematic attempt at genocide of the Jews during World War 2. The Nazis killed 7/8ths of European Jews in a programme of extermination they called “The Final Solution”. It is commemorated on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) in April or May each year.
Many Jewish communities hold commemorative ceremonies on Yom HaShoah to remember victims of the Holocaust. Synagogue services are held, candles lit and prayers said.
