smrit-tee
This literally means, ‘something which is remembered’, and refers to Hindu texts that are by attributed authors. These texts include commentaries by scholars and philosophers, written from their own historical perspective, such as the Manusmriti, and the Ramayana.
The Smriti texts are constantly revised in the light of new circumstances and are therefore thought by most Hindus to be less authoritative than the fixed, authorless Shruti (or ‘heard’) texts.
