The ‘Day of Atonement’. This is a day when Jews don’t eat or drink for 25 hours, and confess any wrongs they may have done in the previous year. It is a time of prayer and meditation, a time to say sorry and to make up for the wrongs done. It takes place on the tenth day after Rosh Hashanah (the new year festival).
At Yom Kippur Jews attend synagogue services, and ask for God’s forgiveness for the things they have done wrong. Before the day, they should try to be reconciled with anyone they have done wrong to in the previous year and to make things right. They may also make donations to charity and resolve to keep the commandments in the coming year.
