aqiqah

a-kee-kaa

aqiqa; aqeeqa; aqeeqah
Explanation

This is the animal sacrifice which is made when a child is born. This is done in thanks to Allah and for protection of the child for her or his lifetime.

Context

In thanks for the birth of a baby, the aqiqah ceremony involves the humane slaughter of an animal (in the UK this is usually done by a butcher) and then the sharing of the meat with the poor and needy. The baby’s head is shaved, the hair is weighed and the equivalent weight in silver (or gold) is given to charity.
