garbhagriha

gar-ba-gree-ha

garbha griha
Explanation

This literally means ‘womb chamber’ and is the special inner room of a Hindu mandir (temple) where the murtis(images of Hindu deities) are placed.

Context

The garbhagriha is the specially sanctified area in the mandir reserved for the deity. The murti (the image of the deity) can be seen through a window or open door, as in some mandirs only the pujari(the serving priest) enters the chamber.
